CITY FLORENCE - (FIRENZE)
The Story
The origins of Florence probably go back to the 10C bc. when the Italic population of the Villanova civilisation established itself at the point where the Mugnone and Arno rivers merge. However, knowledge of this ancient community is rather uncertain, and it is not possible even to determine with accuracy when it became a Roman ´municipium splendidissuim´ . What is sure, is that Silla, in order to punish the town for its loyalties to Mario, seriously damaged it. The town most probably recovered under the agricultural law of Julius Caesar around the year 50 bc. In 570 Florence, together with the rest of Tuscany, became part of the dominion of the Longobardi. It is thought that Charlemagne stayed in Florence on three occasions. After all the vicissitudes that the town suffered between the 11C and the 14C, Florence returned to splendour and flourished under the Medici family, the line of which ended with Giangastone (1737). Power was then taken over by Hasburg-Lorraine family, until 1859, when without any insurrection, Leopoldo II abandoned Florence and Tuscany.

The Zoological Gardens - (Pistoia)
The Zoological Gardens of Pistoia, created and managed by Raffaello Galardini, were inaugurated on 19th April 1970. The zoo is situated in a 75,000m² area in the hills outside Pistoia and among its rich selection of trees and plants, including oaks, pines and tropical plants, live over 600 mammals, birds and reptiles. The majestic jaguar, the mighty polar bear, the agile Rothschild's giraffe, the enormous reticulated python and the rare Madagascan ring-tailed lemur are just some of the animals to be found in the zoo. The zoo employs 19 staff, including administrators, keepers, gardeners and maintenance staff. Health care is guaranteed by the presence of a permanent veterinary surgeon and assistant. Refrigerators, storage rooms and a kitchen are used for storing and preparing the foodstuffs required by the animals: 50 tons of meat, 22 of fish, 100 of hay and 40 of feed and grain each year.

The Story
As a mediaeval castle by the name of Usiano which was united with that of Scotriano, it is still found to be in use in the year 1323. It was placed under the civil and criminal jurisdiction of Lari, from which it was detached in 1630, when, with decree of the Grand-duke Ferdinando II, it was elevated to the position of fief and was entrusted to Roberto degli Obizzi da Padova, to whom the title of Marquis was bestowed. In 1783, with the suppression of the feudal properties of the grand-duke, Orciano was constituted an autonomous community and put back under the jurisdiction of Lari, only to pass later to the vicarage of Rosiganano.

CITY AREZZO - (Arezzo)
The Story
Arretium was originally one of the most powerful Etruscan holdings. A loyal ally of Rome from the end of the 4C BC, Arezzo was eventually drawn into several civil conflicts, suffering losses and destruction during the war between Mario and Silla. The city started to become a free municipality during the 12C. In the following century, Arezzo waged wars against the surrounding cities, gaining some victories, especially against Siena and Florence, which in 1288 sent a powerful army against their rival. Arezzo defeated Siena near the village of Pieve al Toppo, but they surrendered to the Florentines at Campaldino. In 1343 Arezzo regained its independence until it permanently fell under the rule of Florence in 1384. Following the French occupation, the city revolted only to return under the grand-duke’s power. Some notable persons were born in Arezzo like Caio Clinio Mecenate, one of the most authoritative persons in Augustan Rome, Guido Monaco creator of the modern musical scale, Margaritone and Giorgio Vasari both poets and architects, and Francesco Redi the famous author of Bacco in Toscana.

TOURNAMENT OF THE SARACINO il 02/09/2007 It is an ancient knights' tournament which has its roots in the Middle Ages. The tournament was held frequently in Arezzo between the sixteenth and the seventeenth century. The colourful procession, involving more than three hundred participants, winds through the streets of the city, accompanied by musicians and Arezzo's famous " Sbandieratori " standard wavers, before going into Piazza Grande, one of the most characteristic squares in Italy where the tournament will take place. The horsemen charge the huge effigy of the Saracen at a full gallop and armed with lances. The tournament is enlivened by continual turns of events, determined by the skill and by the luck of eight jousters, two from each quarter. The quarter whose horsemen get the highest score on the shield of the Saracen wins the Golden Lance, the prized trophy made each year by an Aretine craftsman. The joust as such is preceded in the morning by the " bollatura " (identification and acceptance) of the horses that will participate in the afternoon tournament and by the reading of the proclamation in the most important squares within the area of the historical center.
