The Story

Empoli, a small court in the late middle ages, was under the dominion of Pisa in the 10C, but was taken from them in 1015 becoming a feudal property, initially of the Cadolinghi, and later of the Guidi (at the beginning of the 12C). In 1182 the Florentine Republic forced Empoli to pledge allegiance to them, in 1255 buying the dominion of a large part of the castle from the Guidi for the sum of 28,700 lire. In 1273 the remaining part of Empoli was joined to their existing property when they bought it from the Guidi for 8,000 lire. In 1260 a famous convention of the Tuscan municipalities was held here, where Farinata degli Uberti courageously defended the right to survival of Florence. In 1530 it was conquered by the soldiers of the Vitelli and the marquis of Vasto; In remembrance of Empoli´s brave resistance during the siege, Vasari painted the event in Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. During the grand-duke era the town was seat of a podestà. At Pontorme, Jacopo Carrucci was born, generally known by the name of ‘ il Pontormo’.
